The gentle lapping of the waves against the shore lulled her into a peaceful state. Maya walked along the beach, her bare feet sinking into the cool, damp sand. The vast expanse of the ocean always made her feel small, yet strangely empowered. The breeze cooled her face.

A crumpled, handwritten note had been tucked into her bag. The writing was familiar, though it belonged to someone she hadn't seen in ages. She pulled the note out, her heart rate steady.

She read the words, the words of apology. She didn't feel anything. She simply turned and threw the note into the ocean. She continued walking, the waves washing over her feet.
